Lying on the edge of the Berkshire Downlands some 5 miles to the north of Newbury is situated the village of CHIEVELEY, named after the wild chives which grow profusely locally and reputedly planted by the Romans.
During the Civil War Oliver Cromwell camped at North Heath, an area of high ground just to the west of the village, prior to one of the Battles of Newbury, leaving behind a life size Blue Boar at the inn nearby.
The old main street through the village has numerous beautiful period houses and cottages from the Queen Anne & Georgian eras together with a lovely verandahed Regency House.
In recent years the arrival of the M4 and more recently the improved dual carriageway A34 which bypasses the village to the east, have both greatly improved road communications and as a village Chieveley has successfully combined these advantages with its superb rural setting. In the village there is a Post Office/general stores with its own bakery, local inn, primary school and doctors surgery. The important old market town of Newbury continues to expand and offers excellent shopping facilities and main line station for London.
