Southend Bradfield lies on the higher ground to the south of the original village of Bradfield (derivation of Broad Field), which is located around the Pang chalk stream in the lower valley and historically links back to the 7th Century as a Saxon settlement. It is later mentioned in the Domesday Book instigated by William the Conqueror in 1086, when the local Manor passed into Norman ownership and prospered. The village also had much involvement during the Civil War era when Cromwell is reputed to have stayed close to the village just prior to the 2nd battle of Newbury in 1644.
Since the two World Wars Southend Bradfield has become the larger of the two village settlements, being predominantly residential. In the centre there is a village hall with an adjoining sports field and tennis courts, two repair garages, Church of England primary school, Montessori nursery school, modern doctor’s surgery, Post Office and a Nursery/Garden Centre. There is also a good local pub serving food and in the immediate area are several notable Berkshire villages including Tutts Clump, Stanford Dingley and Bucklebury. Nearby is the scenic Bucklebury Common with its abundance of ancient footpaths and bridleways and an Avenue of Oaks reputedly planted by Charles 1st. The River Thames at Pangbourne is also close by, with this stretch of the river being immortalised in Kenneth Grahams book ‘The Wind In The Willows’.
The village is very conveniently located, being easily accessible by road to Newbury, Reading and the M4. The larger villages of Theale and Pangbourne both provide a wide range of everyday shopping facilities, with other amenities including banks and mainline stations which have fast commuter services to Reading and up to London (Paddington) in well under the hour. The village is also on a local bus route for Newbury and Reading. The expanding town of Thatcham, just to the east of Newbury on the A4, also offers a wide range of shops and facilities including supermarkets and is easily accessible by road.
Bradfield College, located approximately 1 mile to the East, is a highly regarded Public School also boasting a modern Sports and Leisure Centre including an indoor swimming pool together with a tennis complex. All these facilities are available for public use and additionally the College has a magnificent 9-hole golf course, set in the beautiful undulating countryside of the Pang Valley, which again is available for use by ‘friends of Bradfield’ at a reasonable cost.
